Partners
Next Step Tutors has partnered with several organizations to provide academic resources to the community and contribute to our goal of supporting exonerees, or people who were wrongfully convicted of a crime and released years or decades later.
Why we Started: Our organization was founded Obie Anthony, an exoneree who has taken on a mission to establish and provide resources that he never had access to when he was released after spending 17 years in prison. We are here to heal and support each other as we transition from life in prison to following our deferred dreams.
Our Mission: To meet the immediate needs of exonerees by helping to heal the debilitating spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical effects of being wrongfully incarcerated and to affect policy change for restoration and the righting of wrongs.
Justice for Exonerees: Today, countless exonerees need your help to rebuild the lives taken away from them. Exonerees have no federal guarantee of remuneration or support to help them rebuild their lives. That’s why we are here, and that’s why we need you.
The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice
We have partnered with The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice to bring educational and new opportunities to exonerees. Upon release, these individuals receive no support, and while they can seek financial compensation, the process can take years with no guarantees of success. Often, exonerees return to society with either no family connections or families who are themselves financially struggling. To address this, Next Step Tutors is stepping in by sharing our profits to assist with their reintegration. We provide essential resources such as cell phones, cell phone bills, and laptop computers, along with tutoring and other support.
The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice is a New York based 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that was established by Jeffrey Deskovic which focuses on Reversing wrongful convictions (freeing the innocent), Reform (pursuing policy changes aimed at preventing wrongful conviction), and Recovery (helping the exonerated reintegrate back into society).
In a wrongful conviction case in Westchester County, Jeff was arrested at 16 and wrongfully convicted of a murder and rape he did not commit at the age of 17. He spent 16 years in prison before being exonerated through DNA evidence that identified the actual perpetrator. Following his release, Jeff graduated from the Elizabeth Haub School of Law at Pace University with a law degree and has since dedicated himself to assisting the wrongfully convicted. The Jeffrey Deskovic Foundation for Justice has freed 14 innocent individuals, helped pass 3 laws, and contributed to the efforts of the national coalition group It Could Happen To You, which has supported the advancement of 6 additional laws. More on Jeff's story can be found in the documentary about him on Amazon Prime called Conviction. You can also donate directly to the Deskovic Foundation at https://www.deskovicfoundation.org/donate
